Over The Air 09 And O’Reilly Webcast

Submitted by lester on Tuesday, 29 September 20093 Comments

Late blog again today, I’m trying to finish two assignments one of which has to be in the post by Monday. As always with these things I wonder why I left it to the last minute before making a start.

Friday and Saturday was the Over The Air event in London, after making my way to town on Friday I found the 3 augmented reality talk were on Saturday morning so after a few beers on Friday night I was none to happy about getting up at 6:45am on my Saturday for the return trip.

As it turns out I managed to catch 2 of the 3 talks, the first of which was the talk from Mark Kramer at Mobilizy who was talking about building augmented reality applications for Wikitude. He showed some good demos and while I haven’t written any code for a while I did leave the session room enthusiastic about trying to build something. Once I got back home and took a look at the Wikitude developer website I found that it was all Java based and me and Java do not mix. I’ll be adding myself to the ARML beta shortly as that looks so much easier.

I missed the next talk on the history of augmented reality by Allix Harrison-D’Arcy. My phone rang so I nipped out and bumped in to Caroline Lewko who did the keynote the previous morning so spent ages chatting.

The final talk was by a former colleague, Paul Forster from Microsoft who was going to talk about building an augmented realty game. The demo gods however were not being kind and the whack-a-mole game he was writing had moles springing up all over England so the talk was more generalised. Paul is looking for the community to meet-up later in the year to produce an augmented reality game. I’ll find out more and let you have the run down soon.

webcast

I received an email from O’Reilly who are running a webcast on 14th October 10-11AM PST on augmented reality.

In this webcast, Chetan Damani provides an introduction to Augmented Reality. In addition to answering the most common question, “What the heck is Augmented Reality?” he’ll cover the following:

  • Augmented Reality and the opportunities for consumers and businesses
  • Augmented Reality on the iPhone, how it works and the possibilities
  • Future of AR, applications and technology
  • An overview of us, and our new AR platform that others can integrate into

Chetan is the CEO of acrossair who have the augmented reality iPhone application to find the nearest underground stations for various cities, so it could be an interesting talk.

You can register for the webcast here: oreilly.com/go/augmentedreality

So thats my quick and dirty post for today, I have to get back to my assignment and try to get a few more hours done on that and hopefully get back to normal blogging tomorrow.
