Augmented Reality Golf – But Not What You Think

Submitted by on Tuesday, 11 May 20105 Comments

When you read the headline I bet you were thinking of an application where the programmer has carefully mapped out the distance to each hole, along with locations of bunkers and water hazards. Then created a mobile augmented reality application that tells you how far you are from the green and what club you need to use.

Fortunately, Gigaputt for the iPhone is a bit more exciting than that. Gigaputt is a game that takes place in your own neighbourhood, a game where climbing over your neighbours fence and wading through their flower beds to get your ball is all part the fun.

Gigaputt is the latest iPhone application to get in on the augmented reality and geo-location crazy. Gigaput places a virtual golf course around you and by using the iPhone as a golf club and its accelerometer to measure your swing, you make your way to the virtual hole with the objective of potting the virtual ball in as few swings as possible. The best bit is you don’t need to be good at golf and golf clothing is optional.

If you are lazy or self conscious, the game comes with an indoor mode as well. The game retails for: £1.19 ($1.99) and looks interesting.
