Military Grade Augmented Reality Contact Lenses

ar contact lensesWhile the world is still get getting excited about augmented reality glasses, the US military have recognised that the human eye can’t focus on objects that are in the distance and objects that are up close at the same time. Try it, hold a finger up in front of you at about 18 inches, focus on it and at the same time try to look beyond it. Now imagine trying the same with people shooting at you. Not easy is it.

The split second it takes in switching focus can mean the difference between life and death, obviously it’s not a great experience in a battle situation. To enable a solider to see relevant information and keep his eye on his surroundings, the answer comes in the form of contact lenses supplied by US based iOptik.

The solution however is not futuristic TV screens embedded into contacts lenses, instead the wearer wears both augmented reality glasses that contain the display and a special contact lenses that enable the wearer to focus on 2 points at once.

Take a look at Mashables’ video that shows the concept in action
