Regular readers know that each November we hold the annual Augmented Planet Readers Choice Awards. The only awards dedicated to recognising the world of augmented reality and the only awards that matter. The awards are two fold. Firstly you vote for your favourite augmented reality content across the categories in the list below. At the end of the month the votes are totalled and the winner of each category wins the highly covered Augmented Planet Readers Choice Awards Crystal Plaque for their office, and for your time and effort in voting you go into our exclusive prize draw.

Competition rules: The rules are pretty simple. By making a vote you have the option to enter into the draw. One prize draw winner will be drawn at random. To be eligible to enter you will need to enter a valid email address so we can contact you should you be drawn as the winner. No cash alternative is offered. The Parrot AR Drone requires either an iPhone or Android device to act as a controller. The draw is for the AR Drone only. Only one vote is allowed per person. Augmented Planet will cover the cost of the prize and shipping costs. Any other costs incurred (eg income tax) will not be covered. The winner will be announced in early December and we’ll aim to get the prize to you shortly after. The winner must respond within 1 month of being notified to claim the prize. Augmented Planet reserve the right to amend/change or withdrawal the competition rules at any time, and our decision regarding the award is final.

Firstly, before we get to the competition, let me say that this campaign which launches Ecko’s Cut & Sew line is one of the most polished augmented reality examples I have seen for a while. It’s a nice blend of mixing augmented reality with fashion and very nicely put together.

To celebrate the launch, the Marc Ecko’s Muse Project are given you the opportunity to win some serious cash in two amazing augmented reality competitions.

For a shot at winning the grand prize of $10,000 just direct your own augmented reality video with a virtual Lindsay Lohan using the special marker found on the Marc Ecko Muse website. (marceckomuse.com/glyph.pdf).

Once you have the marker you can hold it up to your webcam and manipulate the virtual Lindsay hologram and alter her emotions to create your own video master piece. You don’t need to have any video creation skills, just some creativity. There are five prizes ranging from $10k for 1st, $5k for 2nd, and three smaller prizes of $1k each.

In addition, Marc Ecko Muse are offering one lucky winner a complete video editing system worth $3k. To take part, users with video editing skills are able to download an additional sets of exclusive images and holograms to create your own video. Again this needs to be submitted and the best creative design will be judged by a panel with the winner receiving a rather nifty prize.

Win a share of $200,000 with AR

Qualcomm recently launched their AR SDK to enable developers to build powerful augmented reality applications for Android devices.

In addition to the announcement about the availability of the new SDK, to get developers started they have also launched a competition for developers to win some serious cash.

Awards

First Place – US $125,000
Second Place – US $50,000
Third Place – US $25,000

In order win, developers just need to build an AR application using their SDK. What you build is entirely up to you. Just upload your application by 7th January 2011 so you are in time for the judging.

Timeline

October 4, 2010: Augmented Reality SDK available for download.
November 15, 2010: Site for submission of entries opens.
January 7, 2011: Site for submissions closes and judging begins.
February 7, 2011: Winners selected by judges.
February 14, 2011: Winners publicly announced.

Note
Always enter coding competitions. Most developers assume that there will be thousands of entries and don’t bother entering even though they have great applications. If you are building an AR app it is well worth the time taking a look at the Qualcomm SDK and giving it a go.

Create your own World in the Wikitude World Competition

Sports fans, we are only weeks away from the greatest sporting event in the world, the World Cup. No doubt you’re already dreaming about the sick days you’ll be taking from work and the beer you’ll be drinking while watching your country make its way to the finals. England vs. – (insert your country here) for the dream final.

What better way to get ready for the tournament and build excitement around augmented reality than entering the Wikitude World competition.

The competition is simple, just do what you love doing and create Worlds for the Wikitude augmented reality mobile browser, and every World submitted will be entered will into the competition giving you the chance to win a fabulous mobile phone. All Worlds submitted will be showcased on the Wikitude website giving you excellent visibility and users will be invited to vote for their favourites. If users vote for you, you may win yourself one of 10 brand new LG Smartphones in time for summer.

You are welcome to submit Wikitude Worlds on any subject. If you are a football fan here are a few world cup ideas to get your creativity flowing:

A Wikitude World showing the stadiums where games are taking place. What would make the World fantastic is if information can be included on fixtures or even live scores

A Wikitude World that shows the location of all the countries that are taking part in the competition. Even better if the countries are removed as they become eliminated.

Fancy a beer? How about a Wikitude World of pubs/bars that are showing the games live on TV

Of course you are not limited to creating Worlds that only relate to the world cup, to enter the competition you can create and submit any Wikitude World. For example why not submit:

A Wikitude World of all the trains or metro stations in your city

A World of all the nearest ATM machines

The choice of what you want to create and share is entirely up to you and it’s easy to get started

Getting started

ARML
You could build your World using Augmented Reality Markup Language (ARML) which is a specification that allows content developers to create content that is displayed on various mobile AR browsers. Wikitude 4 is the first browser that natively supports ARML. ARML is built on a subset of KML, a set of common tags supported across all browsers and some browser (e.g. Wikitude) specific extensions.

XML Webservices
Wikitude also have webservices available for you to use and consume in your application. You can find out more about the Wikitude webservices architecture here www.wikitude.me/assets/WikitudeWebservice.pdf

If you are not a developer you can add your location data by visiting the Wikitude.me website, so why not share your favourite pub where you’ll be watching the world cup.

The Challenge starts on May 13th 2010 and you can submit your Worlds until the July 11th 2010 (a great date as the FIFA World Cup Finale is on the July 11th)

As we approach the end of the year it’s time for you the readers to vote for your favourite augmented reality application of 2009.
