For the last Augmented Planet event back in November we had great feedback from the attendees, so much so that we thought that it would be hard to improve on any future events.

But we have been working hard to find you the best possible speakers from the augmented reality industry, so for those of you that have a ticket already, keep it safe as we have a fantastic agenda lined up for you. In fact, we have so many excellent speakers lined up for the event that the agenda is a nightmare to prepare; we could happily let each of our speakers talk for hours. From talking to each of the presenters I’m excited, we’ll have demos never seen before and we should have our hands on some exclusive hardware, which I am told there is only two units in existence in Europe and America. I’m keeping tight lipped about that one until it’s confirmed, but I’m saving my money.

Augmented Reality Event (ARE)

Augmented Reality Event (ARE) in June is looking like being one of the top events for anyone connected with augmented reality.

The event takes place on the 2nd and 3rd of June and will be held in Santa Clara (California), the tracks list look impressive and will appeal to you whether you are in, Business, Production or Development so it should be well worth the travel even if you are the wrong side of the Atlantic.

There is still the opportunity to speak at the event if you have a good solution or an interesting talk. MWC highlights and the next Augmented Planet event

Greetings from Barcelona, the last few days have been Mobile World Congress. I was running an augmented reality discussion group on Thursday for the Wireless Industry Partnership at the MWC Mobile Jam. Along with my panel of experts, David Caabeiro (Sequence Point Software), Dan Romescu (Augmented Citizen) and Cristina Puig (Visual Century who I will talk about in a later post) we met some really interesting people and had some fantastic discussions. Everything from UI design, should developers build plug-ins for other mobile augmented reality products (eg Layar/Wikitude) or should they create their own. One app verses many apps was a consistent theme along with how do developers make money from augmented reality when so many applications are free. Lots of blogging ammo for another day.

Incidentally, David Caabeiro has open sourced the ARound project, so if you are a Symbian developer and are looking to build an augmented reality browser you can get the source code from here.

In Rouli’s (ARTimes) predictions for 2010 I predicted that by the end of the year we’ll have face recognition on mobile devices. You may recall the excellent TAT concept video showing the future of mobile face recognition (below), I am happy to report that TAT have a working prototype which I manged to catch a demo of at the show. It’s still in the concept stage so not as robust as the video but I can confirm that mobile face recognition is here. Pretty amazing stuff.

I also predicted that augmented reality mapping/navigation would arrive, Mobilizy were the worthy winner of the NAVTEQ challengeat MWC for their Wikitude Drive product. The NAVTEQ challenge is an annual competition designed to recognise the best innovation on their mapping platform. They give away a ton of prizes so well worth keeping an eye on their developer program for future events.

Prediction wise I am doing pretty well and it’s only February.

Planning for Augmented Planet 2010 is well underway, we have located a venue in London Soho and are figuring out what the agenda will be. We’ll shortly be sending out a survey to see if you want a full day or an evening event and to help us focus on the right content. We are also thinking about visiting a few cities so if you are not in London (we have lots of Canadian, US, and Far Eastern readers) then be sure to complete or survey and if we get enough interest we may pay your city a visit.

Quiet Thursday augmented reality update

Layar is global

Sorry no blog for the last 2 days. There hasn’t been that much news around and I have been trying to get some DIY done but suffering from motivational issues.

There was an interesting article posted up on venturebeat yesterday discussing which of the augmented reality start-ups are most ready for market and will survive. It’s worth a read (full article).

Layar released a new video to annouce they are now global. As next week is the picnic in the park in Amsterdam expect more news to come out of the Layar guys as I’m sure we’ll see some annoucements come out of the event.

Nokia released an augmented reality vision video last week and it hasn’t gone down too well. You can read the general slating they received here. It’s an interesting video but really only focus on how augmented reality will enable you to interact with your phone, eg read/send SMS messages. It’s a scary concept to think that people will be driving down the road sending SMS with their eyes.

A quick update on the augmented reality event for London, it’s still in process, we are just looking for a suitable venue. It would be nice to hold it at a companies office who are involved with augmented reality so we are hunting down sponsors in the London area. My team of crack event people are out there chasing people. We’ll go for plan B if we have no luck in the next few days. Either way we are aiming to announce the date/venue next week.

Augmented Planet – Augmented Reality Event

Augmented Planet London Meetup
As I am now officially free from the shackles of work, at least for the time being, I was speaking to a buddy of mine who wants to help me put together the first Augmetned Planet event in London in November. I’ll be hounding some of my old contacts to try and get a venue over the next few days so will be able to firm up a date very soon. The agenda is yet to be set, but it should be a fun filled with killer augmented reality software demos and a talk on building applications for you developer types to help you build your own augmented reality software. Beer and nibbles will also be provided.

There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with the event, in the meantime to help us get a rough idea on numbers, and find out who wants to talk at the event I have prepared a short survey. If you could take the time to complete it that would be fantastic.
