A London theme today with two augmented reality applications for Londoners and visitors to the capital.

The Museum of London have released an augmented reality application for the iPhone. The difference is you use the application to explore London rather than explore a museum.

Using the application, users are able to use augmented reality to explore their surroundings using the iPhone’s camera view and seeing photos of their location as it was in the past. Imaging being at locations such as Carnaby Street and seeing it as it was in the 60s. It’s an excellent idea for Londoners and tourists alike.
The application is free, the only thing missing in my opinion is the ability for users to upload their own historical pictures of London. I’m sure many people have many pictures sitting around in their album that they would want to share and contribute. Sharing would have made the application perfect.

Keeping with the London theme, there have been many books written about London. Some of them thrillers, some of them factual. If you live in London have you ever wondered if any have been based in your neighbourhood?
Get London Reading is an augmented reality iPhone application that enables users to discover just what books were set nearby. Even the in the drab neighbourhood that I call home I was surprised to find that there is a number of books set nearby.

When I first came across this application a few weeks back I didn’t feel it warranted it’s own blog post, but having taken another look, if you like reading it throws up a lot of really interesting books that you can’t help but add to your Amazon wish list. It’s well worth installing and discovering just how famous you area is.

Augmented Planet Event Wrap Up

Good morning, firstly thanks to everyone who attended the Augmented Planet meet-up yesterday. I hope you had a good time and it was worth while. There was around 75 people who made the event so lots of interest in the technology. Feedback from everyone I spoke with was extremely positive, it’s something that you’d like us to do again. A few people offered to donate a venue for next time which will be fantastic, we’ll try to get a beer sponsor as well. The good news is we are looking at planning another event for April so we hope to see you again.

Thanks of course to Nitin Samani, John Wyer for helping out and of course our guest speakers Myles Peyton, James Alliban and Chris O’Shea. You’ll never know the stress me and Nitin went through until John turned up with his laptop.

Mobilizy Shape The Future Of Augmented Reality

The press release from Mobilizy (the guys behind wikitude) was released yesterday. I have to admit that I didn’t see that one coming. For those that missed it, Mobilizy have proposed the creation of an open Augmented Reality Markup Language (ARML) to the AR Consortium. The framework covers displaying geographical annotations and location specific data within an augmented reality browser applications. What will that mean to you and me? Well the obvious benefits are an open standard will ensure that all augmented reality data could be accessed on any browser application.

Think of all those Points Of Interest (POIs) that you have for your GPS, you don’t have to hunt around for POIs that match you device, they just work. Because the POIs are an agreed standard anyone can create them and anyone can use them, the same goes for the proposed ARML standard, anyone will be able to create lists of their favorite things and make them available to other augmented reality users which can be used regardless of the application or device.

Augmented Planet – Augmented Reality Event

Augmented Planet London Meetup
As I am now officially free from the shackles of work, at least for the time being, I was speaking to a buddy of mine who wants to help me put together the first Augmetned Planet event in London in November. I’ll be hounding some of my old contacts to try and get a venue over the next few days so will be able to firm up a date very soon. The agenda is yet to be set, but it should be a fun filled with killer augmented reality software demos and a talk on building applications for you developer types to help you build your own augmented reality software. Beer and nibbles will also be provided.

There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with the event, in the meantime to help us get a rough idea on numbers, and find out who wants to talk at the event I have prepared a short survey. If you could take the time to complete it that would be fantastic.
