We continue the top 10 count down of augmented reality concept games.

So we come to the nuts and bolts of the top 10 augmented reality games concept list as we continue the count down from 5 to 1. (part 1 of the list) Remember this list includes concept and beta games. Essentially games I want but am unable to play because they are not publicly available.

5: Kweekies

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te9gj22M_aU

Kweekies feels like it’s been coming for a long time, it’s probably been one of the most hyped augmented reality games around. The website says coming this Fall which is any time now.

4: AR Tank War

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p_uDRcXc5Y

HIT Labs is one of those names like Total Immersion or Metiaothat when they do stuff you tend to sit back and listen because you know its going to be good. HIT Labs have a number of games (take a look in the applications directory for a few of their entries). AR Tanks look good because the augmented reality aspect actually adds a new dimension to the game rather than being just an after thought. For example in the video you can look around buildings and see if there are an enemy tanks hiding. It’s high on my wish list and a worthy entry at number 4.

3: Spacecraft Racing

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KVuTZMYOF0

OK this one is not the most visual augmented reality application and may be a strange entry for number 3, but it makes me think of a cross between scalectrix and micro machines. Imagine having a few mates over for some beers and this could be the highlight of the evening.

That just leaves us with the battle for first and second place, so before we announce them lets look at the candidates.

I love Zombies (Left 4 Dead is my next xBox game by the way), while the end of the world cultists are are waiting for an asteroid or massive earthquake to arrive in 2012 I’m hoping for a Zombie uprising. ARhrrrr Zombies has some very nice touches particularly the Skittles integration to provide power-ups and restore health. The game is not a concept but playable, however it still in the concept list because it’s not available to play.

ARhrrrr Zombies

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cix3Ws2sOsU

The other candidate for first place is PIT Strategy. PIT Strategy looks absolutely fantastic. I’m not a massive racing fan but just look at the visuals it just screams play me. PIT Strategy is essentially a board game with computer graphics, the cars race and you play the part of the pit crew manager deciding when the car should stop for fuel etc.

PIT Strategy

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGsfDDxhFN0

So finally, first and second place goes to

2nd: ARhrrr Zombies
1st: PIT Strategy

Largely because of the stunning visuals on PIT Strategy. But man I want those zombies!

So that’s my list of the top 10 augmented realty games I want to play, your welcome to comment on the list.

If you play video games then you'll love this top 10 countdown of augmented reality concept games.

Having just finished another xBox 360 game I’m thinking about my next game purchase. Augmented Reality has the potential to revolutionize gaming so today we’ll look at the top 10 list of augmented reality games that I really want to play. The caveat is none of these games are available, some of these are still concepts, some are in beta, and others… well have disappeared. So think of this list as my top 10 wish-list.

Top 10 in reverse order

10: Pacman

www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCRN6Pu7ygg

Yes it’s retro but it makes the list because everyone who grew up in the 80s loves Pacman

9: Skreek Station

www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiWBX_fc2xU

I have no idea what this game is about, it looks interesting but more importantly it looks like one of those games that could change the board game genre.

8: MemoARy

www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_i4hp1lYUg

The simple games are the best and what can be simpler than a game of memory.

7: Marbles

www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AKgH4On65A

Another nice simple game, get the marble to the exit.

6: Roku’s Reward

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUOHfVXkUaI

I’m not sure if this one was ever designed to be a real game or just a promotion video from HP. It’s definitely a game that looks exciting and show’s some amazing possibilities for augmented reality gaming. WifiArmy are another company trying to create a game that spans LBS, augmented reality and mobile but their website has’t been updated for almost a year. Solutions that offer this level of real world interaction would seem to be some way off but it will be interesting to see how Layar’s new 3D platform develops.
